Abstract

The Czech Republic, formerly an important part of the Austrian - Hungarian monarchy, is situated in central Europe, with borders to Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. The agriculture of the Czech Republic is organized into relatively large units. Stock companies or Co-operative farms manage the animal sector, with lands ranging from 200 - 6000 ha. These contain large numbers of cattle or swine.
EM technology was introduced to the Czech Republic in November 1998. It was applied to livestock, especially to sows both fatteners and piglets. The results have been very promising, where growth rates have increased while reducing odors and waste problems. The success achieved in this pilot study illustrates the potential of using EM in agriculture and environmental programs within this region.
